I have worked as an interior designer for the past 40 years, the last few years I have developed a passion for working with clay. Its tactile qualities appeal to my core senses.

When I am not designing, I can be found in my studio researching, studying, and lovingly crafting creatures and objects from clay. I'm inspired by nature and animals, and strive to capture their grace and presence while also adding a bit of whimsy to each creation.

Though a lifelong resident of Lancaster County, I have traveled abroad and draw inspiration from centuries-old art and traditions.  I combine throwing, pinching, and hand building when crafting my pieces before adding layers of slip and underglaze.  Most of my work is fired to cone 6 in an electric kiln. My unique final coat of burnished beeswax helps to add a soft patina to each piece.

In August of 2019, I traveled to England to attend a 3 day workshop in Lazenby England with a master potter.  This trip has further helped to inform my body of work.

I am often asked what inspires my work. My husband and I lost our beloved dog Koko a number of years ago.  His illness coincided with the beginning of my pottery journey. In his 4 short years, he taught me about love, loyalty, companionship, and vulnerability. He also taught me how to value our relationship with the animals we share our world with. He braved his illness with trust in us for his existence. We grew to love him more through this experience. His life, and loss, have driven the direction of my work.  I dedicate my work to his memory.  I hope to share the joy he enriched us with in the pieces I create.

Artist’s Statement

My work is made from clay, a natural material found around the globe. Depending on where the clay is harvested from the earth determines its inherent qualities in each artists design esthetic. It is where nature and science meet with this medium. That’s what is so appealing to me about working with it. It’s tactile qualities, unpredictable firing results, and never ending learning are what continues to drive me.

The direction of my body of work allows for playfulness, a journey into my imagination, and a willingness to share those ideas with the viewer. It allows for an unconventional way of working with clay…always pushing the boundaries of the medium. Spontaneity and trying to loosely control the image as it is being created is always my focus. It keeps me going back into my studio every day.

My love of the material pushes me to always show some of the raw clay without covering it all up with glazes, englobes, and stains. Portions of each piece will have elements of the clay body exposed to remind me that I am working with an ancient earthly element that needs to be honored. It allows me to connect to our natural world and all that it offers us.

Testimonials

I have always had a fondness for hand thrown pottery. You know, that colorful coffee mug with a chunky handle or the funky looking bowl that would be a perfect addition to your coffee table or kitchen countertop. Then I became amazed with Sheri Bare's artistic flair and imagination for adding ceramic animals to her pottery repertoire. Sheri's whimsical animals start to develop their own personalities as she uses her creative artistic mind to bring them to life. One can tell that Sheri's creativeness really soars as she adds a unique twist to each one of her creatures. Thank you Sheri for sharing your talent for all of us to enjoy!“ -Bonnie M.
