“Pressure is a Privilege” ~ Billy Jean King
This quote, from Billy Jean King, hangs at the entrance to Arthur Ashe stadium and a reminder to those that have worked hard enough to play on the court the privilege they have earned.
Lately, something new has been happening in my studio, and I feel privileged to share it.
My sculptures have been given an opportunity to expand their stories.
This summer I did a deep dive into working with different mediums. It may not seem noteworthy, but for someone who is always on a schedule, and most times on someone else's schedule, this was indeed a practice in indulgence.
And I have to say, “I love it”!
The paintings aren't simply backgrounds. They become a setting and a suggestion for my characters. A place for them to stand, wander, contemplate, and perhaps get into a bit of trouble.
I love the idea that a sculpture can exist on its own, but when placed within this new painted world, something shifts. Suddenly, there's a story happening. One for you to finish.
This has been a wonderful reminder that creativity doesn't have to stay in one lane. Clay led me here, but curiosity keeps opening new doors, and I'm stepping through them.
