Studio Ramblings

Some days the studio is full of purpose.

Other days it's full of questions.

My mind rarely travels in a straight line.

While sculpting an ear, my mind will wander to a conversation that isn't quite settled.  The adding of texture can remind me that I forgot to change the laundry around.  Adding a weathered teacup can send me back into the house to load the dishwasher.  My mind can wonder, most often disguised as an ordinary moment.

I've learned not to question my jumbled thoughts.

As an artist I spend a great deal of time noticing things that I may have walked past before.  A crooked fence, chipped paint on a building, the expression on a stranger's face, a feather on the sidewalk, or the colors of a magical sunset.  Moments that hold importance.

Perhaps that's what makes creating so necessary for me.

Collecting little fragments of the world.

Sometimes I think my sculptures are less about the animals than they are about curiosity.  They're reminders that imagination is still worth making room for.  Perhaps that's why the dog above ended up with a bird beak.  It may have been a bit of wonder that had been patiently waiting for me to discover.

Wishing you endless days of wonder at the world around us.

Warmly,

Sheri
